How to Pick the Right American Bully for Your Family
# How to Pick the Right Bully Puppy for Your Family

Choosing a dog is one of the most meaningful decisions a family can make. Choosing an American Bully puppy is an even bigger one because this breed, done right, will become the most loyal, affectionate, and impressive dog you have ever owned. But "done right" starts before you ever set foot in a breeder's yard. It starts with knowing yourself, understanding the breed, and asking the right questions. This guide will walk you through exactly how to do that.
 Know Your Lifestyle First

Before you fall in love with a photo online, take an honest look at your household. The best American Bully puppy for your family is not the most impressive looking one it is the one that fits your actual daily life.
American Bullies are adaptable, but size matters. A compact Pocket Bully can thrive in an apartment with consistent exercise. An XL Bully needs room to stretch out and ideally access to a yard. If you are in a smaller home, factor that into your size choice from the start.
This breed is athletic and energetic, but not a marathon runner. They need regular daily exercise walks, play sessions, time outside  but they are not a working breed that demands two hours of running per day. If your family is moderately active, an American Bully will match that energy well. If your household is largely sedentary, commit to a structured exercise routine before bringing a puppy home.

The American Bully was selectively bred to be a people-oriented companion, and they are well known for patience and gentleness with children. Still, early socialization matters enormously. If you have young kids or other dogs in the home, discuss this openly with your breeder so they can help you select a puppy with the right temperament profile.

 Understanding the ABKC Classes

The American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) officially recognizes four classes of American Bully. Each class represents the same breed — the differences come down to height and, in one case, body structure. Understanding these classes will help you narrow down which type of American Bully puppy is the right match.

**Pocket.** The smallest class, with males measuring under 17 inches at the withers and females under 16 inches. Do not let the size fool you a Pocket Bully carries the same blocky build, thick bone, and muscular mass as the larger varieties. This class is an excellent fit for apartment or smaller-home living, and for families who want the full bully look in a more manageable size.

**Standard.** Males measuring 17 to 20 inches, females 16 to 19 inches. The Standard is the foundation of the breed  balanced, powerful, and proportionate. This is a versatile class that suits active families, homes with yards, and owners who want the quintessential American Bully experience without going to the extremes of size.

**Classic.** The Classic falls in the same height range as the Standard but carries a lighter frame and less overall body mass. It gives a nod to the breed's American Pit Bull Terrier roots, with a slightly leaner, more athletic appearance while still exhibiting true bully traits. A great choice for buyers who prefer a less extreme build but still want a registered, legitimate ABKC dog.

**XL.** Males over 20 inches at the withers, females over 19 inches. The XL Bully is a commanding, larger-framed dog that carries the same temperament as every other class  gentle, loyal, and family-oriented  just in a significantly bigger package. XL Bullies need more space, more food, and more room on the couch. If you have the space and lifestyle for it, the XL Bully is a breathtaking companion.

No class is better than another. The right class is simply the one that suits your home and daily life.
 Temperament Over Looks

Here is where many first time buyers go wrong: they choose based on color, head size, or photos and videos they saw on social media. Appearance should come second. Temperament always comes first.

A well-bred American Bully puppy should be confident without being aggressive, curious without being chaotic, and at ease around new people and environments. These traits are not accidents  they are the product of intentional breeding decisions made generations back, combined with proper socialization from birth through the first weeks of life.

When you visit a litter, watch how the puppies interact. Are they bold and playful, or do they cower and shy away? Is a puppy excessively dominant with its littermates, or does it engage in normal play? Look for the puppy that approaches strangers (including you) with curiosity and confidence, not fear or aggression.

Temperament is heritable. This means a reputable breeder will know the personalities of the sire and dam and can tell you, with accuracy, what to expect from each puppy in the litter. If a breeder cannot speak to the parents' temperaments  that is a red flag.

What to Look for in a Reputable Breeder

Not all breeders are created equal. When you are investing in an American Bully puppy  and you are making a financial, emotional, and long-term investment you deserve transparency and accountability from the person selling you that dog.

**Health testing.** Reputable breeders test their breeding dogs for known health concerns  hip and elbow evaluations, cardiac screening, and genetic testing where applicable. Ask to see documentation. Any breeder worth your business will have it available.

**Socialization from birth.** Puppies that are handled daily from birth, exposed to different sounds, textures, and environments, and raised in a home setting develop into more confident, well-adjusted adults. Ask how the puppies are raised and what the socialization protocol looks like in the first weeks of life.

**Transparency.** A good breeder will answer your questions directly and without defensiveness. They will want to know about your home and lifestyle just as much as you want to know about their dogs. If a breeder is not curious about where their puppy is going, take that as a signal.

**Ongoing support.** The relationship does not end at pickup. Look for breeders who remain available after the sale  for questions, guidance, and advice as your puppy grows. This is the hallmark of someone who genuinely cares about the breed and the dogs they produce.

Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Going into a conversation with a breeder prepared will help you make a confident, informed decision. Here are the questions worth asking:
- What ABKC class are the parents registered under?
- How are the puppies socialized before they leave?
- What does the puppy's vaccination and deworming schedule look like?
- What does the contract or health guarantee cover?
- What support do you offer after the puppy goes home?
- Can I meet the sire and/or dam in person?

A knowledgeable, reputable American Bully breeder in Louisiana or anywhere else will welcome every one of these questions. If the answers are evasive or incomplete, keep looking.
